The Sharon Playhouse is a regional, non-profit theater producing high-quality performances with Broadway-caliber actors as well as talented local community members.  Our mission is to entertain the community of Northwest Connecticut and beyond, while also serving as a teaching theater to encourage aspiring actors and other theater artists of all ages to develop their craft.

The Sharon Playhouse is a 340 seat, Equity SPT-6 Theater, approximately 95 miles from NYC. The Playhouse also includes the Bok Gallery, used for rehearsals, classes and performances, as well as The Patio & Bar where our audiences gather. The Sharon Playhouse is equipped with professionally equipped scenic and costume shops, as well as offices for production planning.

Every year the Sharon Playhouse hires a company of more than 100 people, including actors (Equity and non-Equity), directors, musicians, designers, technicians, box office associates, administrative positions, and front of house staff. Payroll is issued weekly; payday is Thursday.

Although some staff return from previous years, as is typical in seasonal theater, there is a fair amount of turnover as staff members grow and seek other opportunities. For summer 2025, contracts for most technical positions will start in early-May and continue through mid-October 2025. These dates will shift depending upon position.

Production  Department

  • Company Manager – Job Description

    The Sharon Playhouse, the historic, professional, nonprofit theater located in the foothills of the beautiful Berkshire Mountains, is seeking to fill the role of Company Manager for its 2025 summer season.     The Company Manager reports directly to the Leadership Team and is responsible for managing the needs of the cast, crew, production team, and apprentices during the season. The position works closely with the Leadership Team, Stage Management, and other theater staff to provide administrative support, resolve logistical issues, and maintain a positive and professional atmosphere for all members of the company.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

    • Coordinate and maintain all housing locations for all out-of-town seasonal staff, creatives, and actors.

    • Assign and help to maintain all Company Cars

    • Maintain open communication with all seasonal staff, creatives, and actors from first welcome to final departure, specifically:

      • Preparing and sending Welcome Packets

      • Handling Comp Ticket Requests

      • Overseeing Reimbursement Policies and Processing

    • Plan and fully execute all Travel Day schedules

    • Dressing Room & Green Room Management

    • Opening/Closing Show Support

    • Manage Hospitality for Special Event performers and creatives

    • General Communication & On-Call Support:

      • Maintain an open line of communication, making yourself available for any concerns, big or small.

      • Be on-call for issues like power outages, flat tires, maintenance needs, or transportation requests.

      • Troubleshoot housing-related or production-related problems as they arise, ensuring smooth and immediate resolutions.

    Qualifications:

    • Previous experience in theater management, production, or operations, preferably in a regional or summer theater setting.

    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage complex logistical challenges.

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a high level of professionalism.

    • Familiarity with Actors' Equity Association (AEA) rules and regulations is preferred.

    • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

    • Problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing challenges in real-time.

    • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as needed by the production schedule.

    • A genuine interest in providing excellent service and support to all members of the company.

Scenic Department

    The Technical Manager reports directly to the Leadership Team.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of the theater, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.

    • Determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for special events and performances presented at the Playhouse in advance of production dates.

    • Advise scenic, lighting, and sound designers on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for the individual shows, and supervise the implementations of approved technical designs. 

    • Supervise and assist with set and stage construction and management.

    • Assist in training and assignment of apprentices and/or paid technical staff.

    • Scenic Design of the YouthStage productions of Sharon Playhouse Stars (in the Bok) and Kids’ Cabaret (in the Olsen)

    • Monitor the condition of technical equipment and perform preventative maintenance.  When necessary, arrange for the repair/replacement of equipment that aligns to the approved operational budget.

    • Attend production and Department Head meetings and technical rehearsals in order to supervise, support, and assist in the technical aspects of all Playhouse productions/events. 

    • Make recommendations to Playhouse leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.

    • Participate in cross-departmental venue support to ensure overall success of event and venue operations.

    • Coordinate with Playhouse Staff on all facility and staff scheduling needs.

    • With seasonal staff; organize, execute and maintain the cleanliness of stage, shops/storage, and support areas, including buildings and grounds.

    • As a member of the senior staff, this position plays an active role in supporting and mentoring Sharon Playhouse apprentices, sharing knowledge and guidance in your area of expertise to foster their growth and development.

    • Potential part-time work February - March assisting with the 2025 hiring of the production crew.

    Qualifications:

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Direction or Production is preferred.

    • Strong computer proficiency, specifically with Google Docs, Excel and drafting (AutoCAD/Vectorworks).

    The Scenic Artist reports directly to the Technical Director.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

    • The Scenic Artist works closely with our season’s set designers to achieve their artistic vision for the production and should make every effort to follow the Designer’s specifications for the finished look. 

    • Working hours and duties will be set by the Technical Director and Production Manager.

    • Paint design elements according to the Set Designer’s specifications.  Instruct other crew-members and apprentices in proper techniques and supervise setup, paint work and cleanup.  

    • Participates in cross-departmental production and venue support, as needed, to ensure overall success of all events and productions.

    • This position plays an active role in supporting and mentoring Sharon Playhouse apprentices, sharing knowledge and guidance in your area of expertise to foster their growth and development.

Costume Department

    The Wardrobe Supervisor reports directly to the Costume Shop Manager.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

    • Supports the Costume Shop Manager in the successful running of the Costume Shop, including MainStage and YouthStage productions.

    • In collaboration with the YouthStage Costume Director: laundering, striking and restoring all YouthStage costumes.

    • Oversees daily laundry, maintenance, and repair of wardrobe, wigs, and make-up supplies.

    • Communicates with Production Stage Management regarding fittings, rehearsal needs and performer requests.

    • The Wardrobe Supervisor assists the Costume Shop Manager with design integration, construction, fitting, repairing, cleaning, storing, and cataloging of costumes.

    • Assists with shopping for all locally purchased production specific costume items, as needed.

    • Be responsive to emails, meet deadlines, and communicate regularly and promptly with the Costume Shop Manager, Costume Designer, Production Managers, and others as appropriate.

    Qualifications:

    • Candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently, excellent organizational and time-management skills, a positive attitude and a collaborative spirit.

    • All candidates must have a valid driver’s license. Use of candidate’s own vehicle is preferred, but not required.

    • Prior Wardrobe Supervision experience preferred.

    The YouthStage Costume Director reports directly to the Education Team and Costume Shop Manager.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Collaborating with and reporting to the Costume Shop Manager.

    • Reading and researching all YouthStage scripts and materials.

    • Collaborating with the creative teams on the vision and design for each YouthStage production

    • Assisting with Costumes and Wardrobe for tech and performances of the Launchpad Company production of Once Upon a Mattress.

    • Creating a costume plot for each show

    • Designing and sourcing costumes through a combination of pulling, building, buying, and renting 

    • Scheduling and running all fittings

    • Constructing and altering costumes as needed

    • Attending and participating in production meetings

    • Attending designer runs, tech rehearsals and performances

    • Overseeing all aspects of costuming for performances

    • In collaboration with the Wardrobe Supervisor: laundering, striking and restoring all YouthStage costumes.

    • Be present during YouthStage “camp” hours for measurements, fittings, and other needs. On dress rehearsal days, the YouthStage Costume Designer should arrive 30 minutes prior to the youth call time.

    • Collaborating with Costume Shop Manager and/or Costume Designer.

    • Comporting self  in accordance with the Playhouse Safe Work Policy and industry standards of professionalism.

    Qualifications:

    • Prior experience in Wig Design.

    Production Electrician & YouthStage Lighting Designer reports directly to the Technical Director, Season Lighting Designer, and the Education Team.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

    • The Production Electrician is responsible for the safe installation, maintenance, and operation of all electrical systems used in our productions, primarily focusing on stage lighting, by following the lighting designer's plan, ensuring proper power distribution, and operating lighting equipment during performances. 

    • Supervise and schedule the workload for the Assistant Production Electrician. 

    • Supervise and oversee the educational process for the Lighting Apprentice. 

    • Work in collaboration with Creative Teams and Production Staff. 

    • Repair and maintenance of the playhouse inventory, as well as coordinate and advise on equipment purchases and replacement.

    • Collaborate with the season Lighting Designer on the development of a rep plot for the season. 

    • Oversee dimmer check for every performance and be prepared to serve as the lighting board operator and/or follow-spot operator for productions.

    • Participates in cross-departmental production and venue support, as needed, to ensure overall success of all event and venue operations.

    • Be familiar with all campus electrics, emergency protocol, and safety standards.

    • Design the lighting for all Youthstage Productions. The 2025 YouthStage productions include Sharon Playhouse Stars, Finding Nemo Jr., The Great Amusement Park Mystery!, Kids’ Cabaret, and 101 Dalmatians Kids.

    • Attend and participate in production meetings

    • Be responsive to emails, meet deadlines, and communicate regularly and promptly with the Technical Director, Production Managers, Season Lighting Designer, and others as appropriate.

    Qualifications:

    • Candidates must be computer proficient, specifically with lighting design software.

    • Knowledge of Lighting Systems: Understanding the setup, maintenance, and operation of theatrical lighting, including types of lights (LED, incandescent, automated), control systems (DMX, ETC), and dimming systems.

    • Troubleshooting: Ability to quickly identify and solve electrical or lighting issues during rehearsals or live performances.

    • Prior experience as a Production Electrician is required.

    • Design the lighting concept – Develop a lighting plan that enhances the mood, atmosphere, and storytelling of the production.

    • Create a lighting plot – Draft detailed diagrams specifying lighting instrument placement, focus, color, and intensity.

    • Collaborate with the creative team – Work closely with the director, set designer, and other production staff to align the lighting design with the overall vision.

    • Program and cue the lights – Set up lighting cues and work with the lighting board operator to execute them during performances.

    • Supervise installation and adjustments – Oversee the lighting crew to ensure proper hang, focus, and operation of all fixtures.

    • Collaborate and work closely with the Production Electrician, Assistant Production Electrician, and Lighting Apprentice.

    • Attend and participate in production meetings, including those on Zoom ahead of the first day of rehearsal.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

    • Lead & execute the organized audio preparation, strike/changeover, programming and A/V operations for specific produced events at the Sharon Playhouse.  

    • Serves as sound-board operator for all MainStage and YouthStage tech rehearsals and performances, as well as special events, such as open mic nights or cabarets.

    • Repair and maintenance of the playhouse inventory, as well as coordinate and advise on equipment purchases and replacement.

    • Participates in cross-departmental production and venue support, as needed, to ensure overall success of all event and venue operations.

    • This position plays an active role in supporting and mentoring Sharon Playhouse apprentices, sharing knowledge and guidance in your area of expertise to foster their growth and development.

    • Be patient, communicative, and adaptable when working with children, ensuring they feel comfortable using microphones and helping them navigate live sound cues with confidence.

    • Be responsive to emails, meet deadlines, and communicate regularly and promptly with the Technical Director, Production Managers, Sound Designer, and others as appropriate.

    • Assist season sound designer with load out of equipment at end of season.

    Qualifications:

    • Candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently, excellent organizational and time-management skills, a positive attitude and a collaborative spirit.

    • Candidates must be computer proficient, specifically with audio control software.

    • Prior experience in audio engineering is required. 

    • Experience with live sound mixing, including microphones, speakers, and playback systems.

    • Proficiency with digital and analog mixing consoles.

    • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve audio issues quickly during performances.

    • Familiarity with wireless microphone systems and frequency management.

    • Experience with QLab or other sound playback software and familiarity with the following is preferred: Digico S31 digital console; Digico stage boxes for inputs to console from theater's wireless mics and band;  top of the line d&b Main speakers and subwoofers for the house system; auxiliary speakers for the house delays and Aviom headset monitor system for the band/orchestra pit.

    • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with directors, designers, and performers.

The YouthStage Stage Manager and Lead Counselor is an excellent position for any person who loves theater and working with young people.  The YouthStage Stage Manager and Lead Counselor will work on all aspects of our Summer YouthStage Program, including the productions of Sharon Playhouse Stars, Finding Nemo Jr., The Great Amusement Park Mystery!, Kids’ Cabaret, 101 Dalmatians Kids

    The YouthStage Stage Manager reports directly to the Education Team.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Arrive 30 minutes prior to the cast call time during rehearsals and performances

    • Ensure that the day’s rehearsal space is organized, swept, and ready

    • Maintain the prompt book

    • Take down all blocking in the prompt book

    • Track all props

    • Ensure that props are organized and ready for use

    • Draft and send out Rehearsal and Performance Reports 

    • Run sound for rehearsals and possibly performances

    • Lead the run crew and manage the stage for performances

    • Ensure that all creative team members stay on schedule throughout the day

    • Assist with load-ins and load-outs. 

    • Greet all families 

    • Sign youth in and out at the beginning and end of the day

    • Engage with youth to ensure they feel safe, supported, and comfortable

    • Support the director, music director, choreographer, and any other creative team members in fostering a fun and inclusive space

    • Lead warm-ups and games when prompted by the director, music director, or choreographer

    • Treat all students with fairness and respect.  Do not favor any individuals.

    • Run lines with students, review music and choreography as often as possible.

    • Supervise youth during lunch and breaks and ensure that they have everything they need.

    • Help ensure that students are paying attention and following instructions.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience with and passion for theater productions

    • Experience with and passion for working with ages 5-16

    Box Office Associates  act as a main information, reception, and point-of-sale center for ticket buyers. The Playhouse Box Office offers a service style that is professional, engaged, and welcoming – a service that is steeped in proactive and solution-oriented service maintaining effective communication with both internal and external customers (i.e., staff and ticket buyers).

    Key Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Answer the phones as well as check voicemail and email messages .

    • Sell Subscription and Single tickets to all Sharon Playhouse events by phone or walk in.

    • Assist customers with internet ticket purchases.

    • Data Entry of Phone/Mail/Telemarketing/Complimentary ticket Orders using Patron manager CRM Ticketing System.

    • Assist in Group Sales for all Sharon Playhouse events.

    • Maintain supplies in the Box Office, inform the Box Office manager when supplies are low and need to be ordered. (To include ticket stock and envelopes).

    • Work at the theater during theater Box Office hours and show times, selling tickets, processing comp requests and assuring that patrons are comfortably in their seats prior to curtain time, including working with the House Manager if necessary.

    • Print Will Call tickets prior to Show time.

    • Set up computers at Theatre Box Office prior to show time, connecting them to the proper
      internet outlets provided by IT administrators, assuring that Patron manager is running properly and printing tickets at theater.

    • Perform other duties as assigned by Theatre Administrator and/or House Manager.

    Hours:
    The Box Office is open from May to September.  Tuesday through Saturday 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM; Sunday 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
    Show days: In addition to the hours stated above, the Box Office opens two hours prior to the start of show and remains open until 15 minutes after the show has started.   


    Qualifications:Part-time temporary position.

    Job Description: The Sharon Playhouse seeks passionate and dynamic teaching artists for an array of teaching opportunities. Seeking teaching artists with experience working with any age group, from toddlers through adults, for Sharon Playhouse classes, in-school and after-school residencies, and creative team positions for our YouthStage productions. Sharon Playhouse teaching artists are contracted on a freelance, per class/production basis, and work a variety of schedules based on programming needs and teacher availability. Weekday, weekday evening, and weekend hours are available, all year long. The Sharon Playhouse faculty is comprised of teaching artists with wide ranges of experience, both as teachers and as theater artists.  Priority will be given to teaching artists who have housing within a commutable distance to the Sharon Playhouse. Hired teaching artists will be required to undergo background checks, at the expense of The Sharon Playhouse.
